Is Synaptic Homeostasis Just wishful thinking?
نویسنده
چکیده
The bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are secreted polypeptides of the TGF-beta family, whose diverse functions include primary neural induction and the dorsoventral patterning of the neural tube. In this issue of Neuron, Aberle et al. (2002) and Marqués et al. present evidence that BMP receptors may also influence the development of synapses. The results suggest a novel mechanism for regulating neuronal growth and synaptic homeostasis during development.

Measuring Wishful Thinking: the Development and Validation of a New Scale
Title of Document: MEASURING WISHFUL THINKING: THE DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A NEW SCALE Angela H. Eichelberger, Ph.D., 2007 Directed by: Professor Harold Sigall, Department of Psychology This dissertation describes the development and validation of a 10-item scale measuring individual differences in wishful thinking, or the degree to which individuals’ desires bias their judgments. A study...
متن کاملDevelopment of wishful thinking in 7 to 14 year-old Iranian children and adolescences
Several studies have investigated wishful thinking or desirability bias in children and adults, while no research has been conducted on the evolution of wishful thinking in childhood and adolescence. The present research aims to investigate the evolution of wishful thinking in Iranian children and adolescents aged 7-14. This study is an evolutional one with a cross- sectional method. The statis...
متن کاملRetrograde Control of Synaptic Transmission by Postsynaptic CaMKII at the Drosophila Neuromuscular Junction
Retrograde signaling plays an important role in synaptic homeostasis, growth, and plasticity. A retrograde signal at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) of Drosophila controls the homeostasis of neurotransmitter release. Here, we show that this retrograde signal is regulated by the postsynaptic activity of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII). Reducing CaMKII activity in muscles en...
متن کاملwishful thinking Encodes a BMP Type II Receptor that Regulates Synaptic Growth in Drosophila
We conducted a large-scale screen for Drosophila mutants that have structural abnormalities of the larval neuromuscular junction (NMJ). We recovered mutations in wishful thinking (wit), a gene that positively regulates synaptic growth. wit encodes a BMP type II receptor. In wit mutant larvae, the size of the NMJs is greatly reduced relative to the size of the muscles. wit NMJs have reduced evok...
متن کاملA Framework for Understanding Wishful Thinking
While the science and values literature has seen recurrent concerns about wishful thinking, there have been few efforts to characterize this phenomenon. Based on a review of varieties of wishful thinking involved in climate skepticism, we argue that instances of wishful thinking can be fruitfully characterized in terms of the mechanisms that generate them and the problems associated with them. ...
